ZONeSEC Workshop on Endorsement of a White Book: Good Practices for Critical Infrastructure Protection
March 8th 2018
On the 8th of March, GAP together with TELESTO are organizing a workshop entitled “Endorsement of a White Book: Good Practices for Critical Infrastructure Protection”, that will be held at Chania, Greece hosted by GAP. This workshop lies within the scope of WP11 activities and specifically the T11.3 “Recommendations for the implementation of new technologies in the European, National and Regional relevant policies” and is also a means of disseminating ZONeSEC results to specific CI sectors. This first initiative targets the oil and gas sector. It aims at setting the groundwork for providing guidance to Oil & Gas operators on how to enhance the protection and resilience of their network, through the development of Security Management Frameworks that are aligned with the requirements of the EU Regulatory framework (mainly with the EU Directive 114/2008). The requirements for introducing a commonly accepted approach for the development of Operators Security Plans or equivalent procedures (at least at national level) will be identified. In addition, the harmonization of the regulatory framework to adopt Widezone Surveillance emerging technologies will be also thoroughly discussed.

SAVE THE DATE! CEN-CENELEC Workshop on Interoperability of Security Systems for the Surveillance of Widezones
December 11th 2017
Critical infrastructure, such as highways, energy lines or pipelines, may spread over large areas covering wide geographic zones called widezones. There is clearly a need to provide proper security for such infrastructure against illicit actions and against incidents that may escalate to crises. Damages, intentional or not, to critical points (functions, equipment and controls) can compromise the integrity of the involved CI installations and the security of energy and resources supply, with adverse socio-economic effects to citizens, customers and the environment (major accidents). These could lead to large systemic failures of the processes operating in widezones, while economic stability, safety and security in Europe could be potentially compromised. As a result, developing 24/7 surveillance systems for the security of widezones is of major strategic relevance to European economies, industries, authorities and citizens.
The “ZONeSEC” FP7 project partners have worked together towards identifying a guide to a total solution for the protection of widezone infrastructures. A wide range of stakeholders across the EU might be benefitting of guidance and offers guidelines on the architecture in order to address the processing and communication performance limitations, introducing concepts like sensor clusters and sensor capillaries.
This CWA will provide guidance on aspects of the communication requirements between the entities in a widezone surveillance system and in particular the data and metadata that needs to be exchanged.
The kick-off meeting will be held on 11 December 2017 in Athens. All interested parties are welcome to register for participation and submit comments on the draft Project Plan to Workshop Secretary, Sophie Hamza (sophie.hamza@bsigroup.com ) no later than 08 December 2017.

ZONeSEC explores collaboration with ERNCIP initiative
November 28th 2017
TMr. Dimitris Drakoulis (Telesto Technologies) and Mrs. Anastasia Chalkidou (GAP Analysis) on behalf of the ZONeSEC Consortium will attend the ERNCIP initiative and meet experts/policy makers across different EU countries in order to share/exchange information about ZONeSEC’s vision, technologies offered and standardization issues relevant to our developed technologies. In particular, ZONeSEC seek a close collaboration in 3 different areas that JRC and ERNCIP are focusing on within this thematic group (TG) which are 1. AS-IS situation in security in critical infrastructures, 2. Technical solutions existing vs. new ones offered by ZONeSEC and 3. Standardization activities supported by ERNCIP/JRC.
What is ERNCIP?
The European Reference Network for Critical Infrastructure Protection (ERNCIP) is a project hosted by the JRC, in partnership with DG Home, that aims at "fostering the emergence of innovative, qualified, efficient and competitive security solution, through the networking of European experimental capabilities".
The scope of the group is nterested in every possible device or sensor that could be put together to create virtual perimeters for the protection of specific areas of Critical Infrastructures and soft targets.
You can find further information about the ERNCIP Project at the following link: https://erncip-project.jrc.ec.europa.eu

ZONeSEC R&D Activities pave the way for new standardization
August 29, 2017
The ZONeSEC project advances its pace it is time to assess the opportunity to embed the ZONeSEC research activities within the global European standardization landscape in the
secure technologies field.
Our aim is specifically to develop, together with the community of Critical Infrastrictures, pre-normative standards which can be later on adopted by operational stakeholders as standards and/or can be included in later regulatory provisions forcing the use of those standards.
To this end, following a review of the regulatory and standardization landscape that took place in the first 24 months of the project, we have identified the focus of our work in the "Interoperability and management of security systems for the surveillance of wide zones".
Thus we have formally expressed our interest to CEN/CENELEC for establishing a Workshop in this area and submitted a Plan of Action for achieving this.
More news will come in the next weeks.
